Gama Island · L22D · IOTA SA-022
A Grupo DX Bahía Blanca expedition to Gama Island on the southern coast of Buenos Aires Province. Marcos Kraser, LU7DKO, was part of the activating team. The special call sign L22D was used and the operation was later accepted for IOTA credit.
The expedition
In January 2013 a Grupo DX Bahía Blanca team traveled to Gama Island to put IOTA reference SA-022 back on the air. The expedition was led by Carlos Almirón (LU7DSY, SK). Marcos Kraser, LU7DKO, was among the operators who actually traveled and operated from the island.
The team departed from Bahía San Blas aboard the Merlin, skippered by Miguel “el Vasco” Toledo. Access to the island was strongly tide-dependent, making the movement of people, radio equipment and antennas a central part of the logistics.
The station operated on several HF bands using SSB, CW and PSK31. Advance notices circulated through international DX and IOTA publications.
After the activity, navigation, landing and operating documentation was submitted. In February 2013, L22D appeared among the operations accepted for IOTA credit.
GDXBB precedent
Grupo DX Bahía Blanca members had already activated SA-022 in December 2002, shortly after the group was formed, logging more than 3,400 contacts.
Return to Gama Island
L22D put the island back on the air through a new GDXBB expedition.
IOTA credit
The submitted documentation was accepted and L22D became valid for Islands On The Air credit.
